FAQ
At what age should a child see an orthodontist?
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO) and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) strongly recommend an evaluation with a Specialist Orthodontist starting at the age of 7. This early assessment allows for the identification of any orthodontic issues and the implementation of a preventive strategy to avoid worsening conditions, if necessary. With current technological advancements, we can stimulate jaw development and create the necessary space for permanent teeth. This approach increasingly reduces the need for tooth extractions later. Naturally, since some permanent teeth are yet to emerge, a second phase of treatment is sometimes necessary to complete the correction process..
Can adults benefit from orthodontics?
Well-being and joy have no age limit! Increasingly, adults are turning to orthodontics to correct their malocclusions, their smile that is not optimal. In fact, untreated problems can lead to the deterioration of teeth over time. Before considering restorative treatments, it is wise to have an orthodontist evaluate if the supporting teeth are properly aligned, to protect your investment.
What is the duration of an Orthodontic treatment?
The duration of an orthodontic treatment depends on several factors. Each case is unique! A preventive treatment, known as Phase 1, can last from 6 to 12 months, while a complete treatment usually lasts between 18 to 24 months. The duration varies depending on the complexity of the case being treated. This is why it is impossible for us to give a definitive answer without an in-person consultation to assess your dental condition.
What is the difference between an Orthodontist and a Dentist?
An Orthodontist is a dentist who has undergone additional specialized training in orthodontics, after earning their dentistry degree. This specialized training typically lasts 2-3 years and focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontists specialize in aligning teeth, improving occlusion (the way upper and lower teeth fit together), and correcting jaw growth problems. They design and apply orthodontic appliances, such as braces, removable devices, and clear aligners, to address these issues and more. If you want a perfect smile with perfectly aligned teeth, you might want to consult an Orthodontist!.
Are orthodontic appliances painful?
It is normal to feel some discomfort for 2-3 days after your orthodontic appliances are placed. However, this discomfort usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours. To alleviate the discomfort, you can take ibuprofen (such as Motrin or Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol), and it is advisable to eat softer foods during this period.
How much does orthodontic treatment cost?
The cost of orthodontic treatment can vary depending on the nature of the problem and the complexity of the case. An initial consultation is essential for the Orthodontist to establish a precise diagnosis. This will allow them to inform the patient of their treatment options, the most suitable appliances, the estimated duration, and finally the associated cost. At Orthodontistes St-Laurent, we believe that cost should NOT be a barrier to a quality treatment. We accept insurance plans and offer several payment options to suit your needs.
How to brush your teeth with orthodontic appliances?
The orthodontic appliances we provide do not damage teeth or hinder brushing. We provide each of our patients with an orthodontic hygiene kit along with all the necessary instructions to ensure impeccable dental health throughout the orthodontic treatment.
Should I avoid certain foods?
Certain hard foods such as candies, nuts, as well as chewing gum, and gummy candies should be avoided as much as possible. If you want to eat raw fruits or vegetables, we ask that you cut them into pieces.
Should I continue seeing my dentist during my orthodontic treatment?
Yes, absolutely! You should maintain your regular examination and cleaning appointments with your dentist every 6 months during your orthodontic treatment. Your dentist will be able to perform all routine procedures, such as cleanings and fillings. For any major treatments, such as crowns, extractions, implants, etc., we will work in conjunction with your treating dentist to facilitate the planned procedures. Your dental hygiene care and procedures are, of course, at your expense.
